The Japanese men’s national soccer team handed Germany an embarrassing defeat during a friendly between the two on Saturday.
Japan beat Germany 4-1 at Volkswagen Arena in Wolfsburg, Germany, leaving the home crowd stunned.
Junya Ito opened the scoring during the 11th minute, tapping in a cross at the back post. Eight minutes later Leroy Sane replied for Germany, tying the game at 1-1.
Japan would go on to score three more goals, silencing the home crowd in Germany. This isn’t the first time Japan has defeated the European soccer powerhouse. During the 2022 World Cup, Japan earned a 2-1 victory over Germany, contributing to Germany’s early exit during the group stages.
Soccer is growing in popularity in Japan. Recently, top teams like Manchester City have done preseason summer tours in Japan.
