Jo Koy’s monologue at the Golden Globes may have flopped, but he is coming back strong.
Despite the meme-worthy content online, the show must go on. Koy put the criticism aside and
continued on the road for his first show after the Globes, where he was welcomed by a
standing ovation in the 3,100-seat Stifel Theatre in St. Louis.
Embraced by the crowd at St. Louis, Koy addressed the monologue at the Globes and expressed
his frustration, “Lot a marshmallows, man. They’re delicious, but goddamn, they’re soft. I just
come from a different time. I see the changes that are happening. I get it, but goddamn, can we
fucking laugh at ourselves?”
Koy, a comedian, actor, and host of Filipino descent is the first Asian American to solo host the
Golden Globes, an awards show that faced criticism for its lack of diversity.
Cringe worthy moments included a jeer at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s highly publicized
romance. “As you know, we came on after a football double header,” Koy said onstage. “The
big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL: On the Golden Globes, we have fewer
camera shots of Taylor Swift, I swear.”
A joke about Barbie being a “plastic doll with big boobies” also fell flat. Standing in front of
scattered laughter and awkward silences, Koy was noticeably flailing when he blamed the jokes
on other writers, and confessing that he got the gig ten days ago.
Despite the criticism he received, Koy told the Los Angeles Times that he would give himself an
“A-plus just based on the courage (to do it).”
Koy said he is proud of the Filipino representation he brought to the Globes, “I’m the first Asian
to ever solo host. It’s 2024. I’m the first out of 81 years,” Koy said. “Imagine if someone said yes
before me. We’d still be at the 82nd Golden Globes and still no Asian as a solo host, so if I didn’t
say yes, there still would never have been.”
For Koy, the Globes may only be a hiccup in his career as a comic, he will continue with the “Joy
Koy World Tour” through May and his new Netflix special will be coming out later this year.
