Suni Lee and the U.S. women’s gymnastics team have won the gold medal in the team final at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The crowd was on their feet as they watched Lee’s teammate, superstar Simone Biles perform the last routine of the night on floor. Biles, whose floor scores are using 14+, needed an 8.9 to secure the gold. Team USA was practically guaranteed the gold, so her teammates and the crowd could relax and enjoy a performance from perhaps the greatest gymnast of all time.
USA team members Lee, Biles, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey and Hezly Rivera celebrated together when Biles’ score came in and made it official. They walked back out onto the floor waving an American flag in triumph.
The win comes three years after Lee, Biles, Chiles and Carey narrowly missed out on team gold at the Tokyo Olympics. The gymnasts have also been able to enjoy the energy in the crowd and the camaraderie at the Olympic Village, which was restricted in Tokyo due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lee performed on three events for the team final: uneven bars, beam and floor. She fell during her uneven bars warm-up, startling commentator and Olympic gold medalist Laurie Hernandez, but she delivered.
In the third rotation, Lee went second for Team USA on the balance beam, performing after her teammate Jordan Chiles’ fall. Her routine was clean and earned her a 14.600. She finished the night on floor.
Several celebrities were in the crowd to support Lee and Team USA, including Olympic gold medalists Michael Phelps and Serena Williams. The broadcast also cut to the U.S. men’s gymnastics team, who won the bronze medal in the team final yesterday, as they watched their teammates win gold.
After the win, Lee and Biles were seen on NBC’s broadcast discussing the TikToks they wanted to make. This appears to be the result:
