2 NYPD sergeants shot while chasing Chinatown robbery suspect

Two NYPD sergeants were shot following a police chase on Manhattan’s Lower East Side Thursday afternoon.

The shooting occurred on Canal Street near Eldridge Street around 4 p.m. as the sergeants were responding to a robbery call from an e-bike shop in Chinatown.

The exact circumstances of the shooting are unclear, but after the suspect fled, officers pursued and tried to wrestle him to the ground near Eldridge Street, between Delancey and Rivington Streets. During the struggle, the suspect pulled out a pistol and fired, hitting the officers.

The 22-year-old suspect shot one of the cops in the thigh, and the same bullet went through and wounded the other cop in the leg.

Both officers were taken to Bellevue Hospital and are expected to make a recovery

A witness, Maxwell Vice, told the Post “There’s a scuffle at this corner and there’s like four or five officers, and out of nowhere I hear a pop and everyone ducks.”

“They said he had a gun, but I couldn’t tell because he was running so fast,” he added.

The shooter was taken into custody and has a record of previous arrests. The gun was recovered at the scene and he is now being treated for an unknown injury.
