A Houston Police officer is among those arrested in a Chinatown gambling raid, reports ABC13.
Police identified officer Thomas Lam Friday as one of five people arrested Thursday as part of a two year crackdown on crime in Southwest Houston. Lam is described as a veteran cop who has spent more than a decade in the Department.
According to KHOU, Lam is the third officer arrested in the operation. Earlier this year, former Houston officers Larry Nguyen and Huy Ly were also arrested after authorities said they were connected to illegal gambling.
“I think (Lam) is a disgrace to the badge. He’s a disgrace to the uniform.” Chief Art Acevedo said.
Lam is accused of providing protection to Café Thanh Quynh, where authorities said illegal gambling occurred. They said his role would be to decide who could get in, and who could not.
“Evidence shows he’s (the officer) is a prolific gambler, and he gambled his career away,” prosecutors said.
