Award-winning actor Darren Criss says being half-Filipino has cost him many roles, reports Entertainment Weekly.
Criss scored a clean sweep this year, winning an Emmy, Golden Globe, Critics Choice and now Screen Actor Guild Award. He’s the first Filipino American to do so.
“It’s a shame that I’m the first. It should have been a while ago, but that’s not the conscious fault of anybody. The roles are few and far between for someone of my ethnicity,” said the half Filipino from San Francisco.
“While that’s a tragedy, the winds are shifting and I’m very excited. It’s an honor, and it’s been the coolest year for representation across film and television and culture in general, and I think what’s really exciting about it is that it’s not just some kind of Hollywood agenda. I think consumers have shifted what they want to see; they want to see themselves, they want to see their stories told by new faces and serve that appetite. So to have been a small part of that is a extraordinary privilege that’s much bigger than myself.”

Variety reports that Mindy Kaling has finalized a $13 million deal with Amazon for Late Night.
Emma Thompson co-stars as a comedian who reluctantly takes Mindy Kaling under her wings as a writer when she is pressured to hire more women and minorities.
“So much of this movie is about being a fan and being on the outside of the entertainment business,” Kaling told Variety. “That story has been told many, many, many times by 52-year-old White men, and I love all those movies. And as a comedy nerd I’ve always identified with them because it was the closest thing that I could identify with. There was no one like me making those kind of films.”
