The family of a Pakistani exchange student murdered two years ago near Houston is keeping her memory alive.
NBC Dallas reports that the parents of Sabika Sheikh have launched the Sabika for Peace Foundation.
The murder of their daughter in Santa Fe, TX, stunned the Pakistani American community two years ago. Thousands attended a memorial service for Sheikh in Santa Fe.
The foundation established by her parents, Abdul Aziz Sheikh and Farah Naz, would fund scholarships for low income Pakistani women in their home country and eventually expand to assist exchange students at American schools.
“I’m always worried that we might forget (Sabika),” Naz said to the Houston Chronicle. “But starting this foundation I know this is impossible. I know if I continue working with foundation, she will always be with me.”
Everytown for Gun Safety, which is assisting the family in its lawsuit against the shooter’s parents and an ammunition dealer, is also helping with the foundation.
“Their strength and commitment to trying to make things better here in the United States when it comes to gun laws and gun safety and also in their home country of Pakistan has really inspired all of us,” said Eric Tirschwell of Everytown for Gun Safety.
