Frederick Yeh’s life turned dramatically when he visited China after graduating from John Hopkins Medical School.
Plans to become a doctor were set aside when in 2007 he returned to his childhood home in Hainan and discovered that sea turtles were sold in local markets.
English News.CN reports he then decided to establish Sea Turtle 911, a non-profit in China dedicated to protecting the endangered turtles.
“We have plenty of food that’s available to us, but these animals are endangered, and there are not many left,” said Yeh. “If we keep on eating them, eventually they will be extinct.”
He’s since added a floating hospital and is currently caring for 14 injured turtles.
