The Asian American Defense and Education Fund today urged the US Supreme Court to hear a discrimination case filed by Asian American police officers, reports WBRI.The officers charge that the Port Authority in New York and New Jersey through discriminatory practices denied promotions to the officers. “These were not merely isolated incidents of discrimination but part of systemic practice,” said Ken Kimerling, Legal Director of AALDEF. Prior to 2001, not a single Asian American was promoted by the Authority. A jury found in 2009 in favor of the officers, but an appeals court reduced the damages awarded. “The Asian American officers are legally entitled to receive damages for the entire, continuing period during which they were subject to a discriminatory promotions process that denied them advancement because of their race,” said Kimerling. “We urge the Supreme Court to accept the case for review and overturn the Second Circuit’s decision and restore full relief to the seven petitioners.”
