Garden Grove, CA City Councilwoman Dina Nguyen defended herself against a backlash after she addressed a large Vietnamese crowd in the chamber in their native language, the OC Register reported
The Vietnamese American wanted to explain why she would not be backing another Vietnamese American considered for a vacant council seat. She spoke about five minutes.
“It was kind of awkward for those who only speak English,” Flores told her at this week’s council meeting. “We felt alienated.”
Nguyen was making her remarks to the large number of Vietnamese Americans in the chamber, plus a contingent of Vietnamese newspapers and television stations.
“Before I could even take my next breath to translate into Vietnamese, just like all the other times I’ve done that, a heckler in the audience interrupted rudely before I could even translate it,” said Nguyen.
What do you think. Was it appropriate for Nguyen to address the Vietnamese Americans in their native language?
