Herald OnLine: South Asians to Rally With African Americans on MLK Day

Martin Luther KingMembers of the South Asian community will rally with African Americans  and others to advance the cause of civil rights in California today at noon. The rally will take place at the steps of the State Capitol in Sacramento, reports the Herald Online

“We will proudly stand beside other champions of liberty to proclaim the inherent and inalienable dignity of every human being,” remarked  Bhajan Singh Bhinder, Founding Director of Sikh Information Center.

“South Asia has a long tradition of defending civil liberties. We are thrilled to consolidate with those who promote identical traditions here in the United States as we honor the 84th anniversary of Dr. King’s birth.”

Among the topics being addressed, rape and the denigration of women. The subject gained added significance after the brutal rape and murder of a woman on a public bus in New Delhi.
