The third Indian American ever elected to Congress in U.S. history called for five more South Asians to follow him in the House of Representatives.
Newly elected Rep Ami Bera (D-CA) was among those who attended the South Asian American Leading Together (SAALT) celebration of President Barack Obama’s re-election, reported India West.
Kiran Ahuja, executive director of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and Congressman Mike Honda (D-CA) also addressed the crowd. All applauded the tremendous progress South Asians have made and the importance of building on that progress. Many believe the isolation many South Asians have felt in the past is now a thing of the past.
Community organizations like SAALT have provided the support and resources to make it easier for South Asians to retain their culture and advance in American society.
