A Vietnam War Memorial planned for the Texas State Capital of Austin has divided the lone star state, reports YNN.
The original design featured a solider representing the South Vietnamese Army. It has now been replaced by an Asian American soldier to reflect the diversity of the United States and US military.
“They were the reason we we’re in Vietnam. We were there fighting for them and fighting for freedom,” Patrick Riley, a veteran of the Vietnam War, said.
But the Texas Capitol Vietnam Veterans Monument Committee defended the change as one including a mixed race of American soldiers.
“The committee will continue its work to complete and dedicate a monument fitting of the sacrifice of our fallen and the service of our fellow Texas veterans who served,” Robert Floyd said.
