One of the biggest goals of the New Sikh Congressional Caucus will be find solutions of the problem of hate crimes, according to India West
The killing of six Sikhs by a gunman when he opened fire in a Sikh temple in Wisconsin is a major motivator behind the Caucus.
“The Oak Creek tragedy was a game changer for our community,” said Pritpal Singh who many credit along with Harpreet Sandhu with leading the effort to form the Caucus. “A lot of the issues we face stem from ignorance. Sikhs have a unique identity, and the Caucus is a great way to build awareness of our uniqueness.”
The focus of this caucus will be on civil rights.
“We have been saying for a long time that we need a voice to deal specifically with Sikh American issues,” said Rajdeep Singh, director of law and policy for the Sikh Coalition.
Just launched last month, the Caucus is already caught in the middle of a controversy. You can read more about that in India West,
