As rising seniors begin to look toward their final year in high school and their new life in college, parents too are sorting out their kid’s choices.
According to a blog by Allison Singh for the Huffington Post, Asian American parents are making their list and checking it twice. One type of college you may not find on that list is a good liberal art college. As one guidance counselor put it, Asian American parents pack recruiting sessions for a handful of elite colleges. Other than that, they are often no shows.
Part of it may be status. But another large factor is upward mobility. The list of colleges gets longer and more varied the more income the family accumulates. For immigrant families, the choice of college is all about return on investment.
So what has been your experience or the experiences of other Asian American families you may know? Read Singh’s blog in the Huffington Post and let us know what you think.
