A proposal is being considered to rename a Chinatown street after Private Danny Chen, a soldier who committed suicide after being the target of racially motivated hazing, reports DNA Info.
“It will be a lasting legacy that all who serve in the military should be treated with dignity and respect,” said Elizabeth OuYang, president of the Organization of Chinese Americans’ New York office.
Supporters want to co-name Elizabeth Street between Canal & Bayard Streets “Danny Chen Way.” Chen once lived on that street. OCA NY has collected 500 signatures from residents and businesses in the area who support the idea.
The idea must first be approved by the community board before going to the NY City Council.
Five of eight soldiers who were court martialed in connection with the hazing received prison sentences.
