The FBI will begin tracking hate crimes against Sikhs, Hindus and Arabs, reports the Hindustan Times.
The announcement follows pressure from civil rights groups which intensified after the shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin 10 months ago that left six people dead.
“The new changes will strengthen diagnostic and deterrence efforts; increase awareness about Sikhs among law enforcement officials nationwide; and encourage Sikhs to begin reporting hate crimes to local, state, and federal authorities,” said Rajdeep Singh, director of Law and Policy for the Sikh Coalition.
The Sikh Coalition says its survey found 10 percent of the Sikhs in New York City and San Francisco report being victims of a hate crime.
The change will take place by 2015
