A new report from Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy reveals 7 not widely know facts about Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders and AMEMSA, reports Colorlines.
AMEMSA stands for Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim and South Asian, four distinct groups with shared experiences, but who are often indistinguishable by other Americans.
Among the facts highlighted in the report.
— racial profiling is common of Southeast Asian and Pacific Islander boys with Samoans having the highest arrest rate of any other racial or ethnic group.
— Asian American, Pacific Islander and AMEMSA youth are the most frequent targets of school bullying with more than 50 percent of Asian Americans report being bullied in school.
–Boys who wear turbans are more likely to be bullied or to be called a terrorist.
–Asian American LGBTQ youth are subjected to homophobia, racism and transphobia in school.
–40 percent of Hmong American youth live in poverty.
–Many Asian Americans are undereducated Colorlines.
–One in four Koreans is undocumented. One in six Filipinos are undocumented.
