The son of Daniel Inouye is helping to launch the Inouye Project, a joint effort with the University of Hawaii and Library of Congress to preserve the late Senator’s personal effects and congressional papers.
Ken Inouye talked exclusively to KITV and shared a never publicly seen before home video of the Senator playing the piano with his only grandchild, three-year old Maggie.
Inouye learned the piano as part of his rehabilitation after losing an arm fighting in World War II.
“He got up and started playing the piano and all of a sudden she lights up and goes, ohhh, and starts motioning that she wants to go over there and that was the bond.” said Ken.
But his father could also be stern. Ken recalls the time he broke curfew.
“He would start out are you aware of the rules of the house about coming home late and then you would try to explain yourself, ‘you see what happened’ and then he would say that’s not the question I’m asking. Please answer the question I’m asking.”
Ken also recalls that it was his father who took him to his first concert. None of his friends wanted to go, so his father took him. It was a Kiss concert. And no, his father was not a fan of Kiss.
