Colleen HanabusaColleen Hanabusa hopes to have the last word.

Governor Neil Abercrombie passed her over when he named Brian Schatz to succeed Senator Daniel Inouye after the long time Senator from Hawaii passed away at the age of 88.

Hanabusa had been Inouye’s choice to succeed him and the Senator let his feelings known right before he died in a letter to Abercrombie.

Hanabusa is now challenging Schatz in what is turning out to be one of the most closely watched Senate races in the upcoming 2014 election.

“This is the first time the people are going to be able to vote for who they feel should fill that Senate seat,” Hanabusa said to Politico. “So the people have the opportunity to choose, and I’m putting myself out there because I believe the majority of people out there want me.”

Politico recently named Hanabusa one of the 50 Politicos to watch.  The 62-year-old is a fourth generation Japanese American first elected to the state senate in 1998.
She was elected to the House of Representatives in 2010 defeating GOP Rep. Charles Djou.
She considered Inouye her mentor and friend.
“What I told everyone who was upset about the decision that was being made is, for me, [Inouye’s support] was probably the highest compliment I could be paid,” she said.
Inouye’s deputy chief of staff Peter Boylan recently signed on to be Hanabusa’s communications director for the campaign.
But with incumbency going for him, Schatz will be a formidable opponent. This weekend former Vice President Al Gore endorsed Schatz for his work on environmental issues.
But Hanabusa has been involved in tough campaigns before. You can read more about that  in Politico
