A lawsuit is about to be filed on behalf of non-English speaking families in the Asian American community against several schools outside New Orleans, reports NOLA.
The Vietnamese American Young Leaders Association of New Orleans and the national Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund will file a federal complaint alleging the schools are violating Title 6 for not providing equal access to non-English speaking students and families.
“Despite the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in Lau v. Nichols (1974) declaring that students cannot be denied their right to education due to language ability or ethnicity, it is clear from student testimony that many schools in New Orleans are failing to provide limited-English students an equal opportunity to participate in their core academic programs,” a recent report from VAYLA states.
