Nina Davuluri of New York (pictured left) is the new Miss America.
CBS reports she is the first Indian American ever to hold the crown and just the second Asian American.
Angela Perez Baraquio of Honolulu, Hawaii won the title in 2001. The Filipino American was born to two immigrant parents from the Philippines.
For her talent, Davuluri performed a classical Bollywood fusion dance. Her aspiration is to be a doctor. In the past, she has openly discussed her successful struggle to overcome bulimia and talked with pride about
being an Indian American.
It was the year of the Asian American in the pageant. Miss California Crystal Lee
was named first runner up. Lee is from San Francisco and is a Chinese American. She was one of two Crystal Lee’s competing in this year’s pageant. Miss Hawaii is also named Crystal Lee.
Fourth runner up was Rebecca Yeh of Minnesota.
You can watch video from the pageant on ABC News.
From Corky Lee via Facebook RE: First Indian American to win Miss America: Three out of the five finalists are Asian American, will probably not happen again. I really liked Nina's answer about Julie Chen's plastic surgery in the Q & A session. Think that and her Indian fusion dance sealed the deal for the crown.
From Corky Lee via Facebook RE: First Indian American to win Miss America: Already racist Americans are calling her "Arab" immediately after she won the title. I suppose if Crystal Lee, Miss California won it would be no different…
From @AAPlay: RE: First Indian American to win Miss America: Congrats @MissAmerica!
From @MultiAsianfams via Twitter RE: First Indian American to win Miss America: Not in love w beauty pageants for obvious reasons. But this is worth noting. Thx @AsAmNews
