Miss America Nina Davuluri proclaimed she’s the new girl next door, on CNN‘s Erin Burnett Show.
“I have always viewed Miss America as the girl next door,” Davuluri said. “But the girl next door is evolving, as the diversity of America evolves. She’s not who she was 10 years ago, and she’s not going to be the same person come 10 years down the road.”
Despite the racist reaction on Twitter to her victory as the first Indian American Miss America, Davuluri chose to focus on the countless tweets recognizing her accomplishment and applauding it.
Davuluri says she was mentally prepared for some of the negative reaction because she had already experienced it when she won the Miss New York competition.
“I am living my American dream,” she said.
