The Miami Heat today rewarded Coach Erik Spoelstra for two straight NBA championships with a contract extension, reports ESPN.
The Filipino American was entering the final year of his contract and is expected to get a significant raise from his $3 million base salary.
Little has been publicly released about the number of years of Spoelstra’s extention or his contract terms, but there is speculation he will have new responsibilities in the front office.
In five years as Miami Heat coach. he has taken the Heat to three straight NBA finals, winning the last two championships with a little help from the trio of Lebron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.
Many have speculated Spoeltra has been denied many of the accolades that normally come with two straight championships because he is blessed with a strong line up. But in the last year, many NBA insiders have acknowledged Spoelstra’s delicate balancing act of egos and the strong defense he has implemented.
“What’s overlooked for him is the management of the team,” Wade told the AP last season. “It’s not the coaching part of it. It’s, ‘Can you manage these egos, these personalities, without having one your damn self?’ He’s done it.”
