Protestors successfully stopped a celebration of the founding of the People Republic of China in Alameda, east of San Francisco, reports the Mercury News.
The ceremony was supposed to mark the sister city relationship between the city and Jiangyin, near the Yangtze River and would have included a presentation of the flags of both the United States and China.
A crowd of 75 people showed up instead to protest the Chinese occupation of Tibet.
“They need to understand that the Chinese government does not listen to the Tibetan people,” said Giovanni Vassallo of the Bay Area Friends of Tibet. “We are herr to give them a voice and to let the American people know what’s happening.”
Students from the Chinese Christian School were on hand to sing the national anthem of both countries, but were rushed back onto the school bus when organizers announced the event was canceled, to the cheers of protestors.
Just last week, Tibetan protestors also stopped a similar celebration planned in the city of San Leandro, also in the San Francisco Bay Area.
