The second anniversary of the death of Private Danny Chen was marked with a candlelight vigil in New York City Thursday night, reports NY1.
The Chinese American killed himself from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while in Afghanistan after being hazed and racially taunted by his fellow soldiers.
His case has become a rallying point for many in the Asian American community. Eight soldiers faced court martials in the case and received various punishments including dismissal from the Army and ten months in prison.
The New York Times reports the Washington National Opera has commissioned an opera based on his life and death. It’s scheduled to premier in June at the Kennedy Center in Washington.
