A study by Yu Chen published in BMJ.com has found that being overweight has a greater adverse impact on surviving heart disease in East Asia than South Asia , reports On Medica.
The researchers analyzed data on 49,184 cardiovascular deaths that occurred over nearly 10 years in China, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, Korea, India and Bangladesh. The association was stronger among those under 53, even among those who don’t smoke and without hypertension.
People considered underweight also had a higher mortality rate.
The report did not look at mortality rates among Asian Americans.
