Much has been made of Miss America Nina Davuluri being the first South Asian American Miss America in the history of the pageant.
But according to a blog in the MedPage, perhaps Nina’s bigger accomplishment is that she is raising the bar of the scholarship pageant.
Davuluri aspires to be a doctor in a pageant that in the past has awarded the crown to people who aspire to work in professions that require more personality.
Communications, acting, broadcasting are just a few of the fields past winners have aspired to enter.
One pageant official once even told a reporter that contestants planning to enter image conscious jobs tend to do better in the Miss America pageant.
But this year the pageant seemed dominated by women in the sciences.
