Filipino American actor, voice artist, writer and producer Dante Basco thrilled his fans at an event on the University of Pennsylvania campus celebrating Filipino American Heritage Month, reports the Daily Pennsylvanian.
Among his many roles during his 25 year career, Basco played Rufio in Steven Spielberg’s Hook and was the voice in Avatar: The Last Airbender on Nickelodeon.
He talked about his career at the event put on by the Penn Philippine Association.
He also discussed his racial identity and of often being confused for Latino or other type of Asians.
“If I had to wait for a Filipino role,” Basco said, “I would be screwed.” He says he is working hard to create more roles for Asian American actors.
“People come up to me and say you were the first cool Asian guy I saw on television. I’m grateful to be that doorway.”
RE: Starstruck fans come out for @dantebascoThere is a mistake in the article. He did not play Peter Pan in Hook. That role was played by Robin Williams. Dante was Rufio!
Thank you. That will be corrected.
