A park in Maui will be renamed this Thursday in honor of the first elected Filipino American in the United States, reports Maui TV News.
Richard “Pablo” Caldito, Sr. won a seat on the Maui Board of Supervisors (now Maui County Council) in 1956 and served until his retirement in 1972.
In a news release, Maui County stated Caldito was the first elected Filipino American anywhere in the United States. Another article in the Asian Journal said he was the first elected Filipino American democrat in the US. Which ever is correct, there’s no disputing Caldito is a pioneer.
He died at the age of 98 two years ago.
The Waihe`e Ball Park will take on Caldito’s name in a ceremony this Thursday at the park at 3:30 pm.
