PRI: Three Generations under One Roof a Way of Life for Some Asian American Families

Chinatown homeDespite the improved economy more and more Americans are living with their parents and grandparents, reports PRI

But according to the PEW research center, Asians are twice as likely as white to have three generations living under one roof.

Donna Tam returned home after four years living outside the Bay Area for a job.

Today, at 29, she’s back at home living with her parents, grandparents and younger brother. For Donna, it brings back memories of grandma walking her to school.

In Chinese families, a lot of how we do our day-to-day things is based on [a] ‘we’re all in it together’ kind of thing,” Tam said. “There’s a lot of pitching in.”

That means she volunteers to help with the rent,  pay the cell phone bill and even gives money to her brother in college.

“There’s going to be friction,” admitted Donna. “What’s important is… just keeping in perspective what your parents did for you or what your grandparents did for you. What you can do for the generations that come after you. That’s how you, kind of, keep it together.”

You can learn how the family manages to live in cozy conditions under one roof on PRI.
