WABC: Asian American Fitness Mom–Role Model or Bully?

CATEGORIES

Maria KangFitness model Maria Kang set off quite a firestorm on Facebook with her post intended to implore moms to exercise and get healthy.

“What’s your excuse,” read the bold headline in the photo showing Kang in a bikini showing off her toned body with three kids smiling beneath her.

“I posted it because I thought it would be inspiring and motivating to mothers and people who aren’t mothers to get out and work out- if she can do it so can you,” said Kang to WABC.

But others have been offended by her blunt “no excuse” headline. Akrypti in her blog for 8Asians  accuses Kang of playing the blame game and ” contributing to female insecurities; she’s pushing for conformity to a very rigid standard of “fitness” and really, female beauty and sexuality, ostracizing anyone who is born “big-boned,” “apple-bottomed,” “pear shaped,” suffer from a family history of obesity, or whatever else have you.”

You can watch WABC’s interview with Kang and read Akrypti’s response to the photo in 8Asians.

OK, moms, do you find Kang’s message inspiring?
