Efforts to save the last remaining remnants of Chinatown in Southern California’s Inland Empire continue, reports the Los Angeles Times.
The China House in Rancho Cucamonga was placed on a national list of endangered historic places by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in June. The designation makes its less likely the city will be able to demolish the former home of up to 700 Chinese who worked in the farm fields from 1919 to 1940 .
The city had declared it dangerously unsafe earlier in the year.
“I really love this old place,” said Ed Dietl of the town’s Preservation Association. “For me its an icon for history for Rancho Cucamonga. We somehow got to save this building. I’m very happy its historically preserved temporarily, but we want to make this on the national register and make it a part of Rancho Cucamonga’s history.”
