The Korean American community is raising funds for the defense of Stephen Kim, a Lawrence Livermore Lab worker accused of leaking government secrets to a Fox News reporter, reports Hankyoreh.
The case against Kim is part of a larger government crackdown on news leaks to reporters.
“We’ll establish a committee for helping Stephen Kim, and we’ll launch rescue committees in each major city,” said Lee Myung-seok, former president of the Korean-American Association of Queens, New York. “We’re also planning to send petitions to the White House, the Justice Department, and major media outlets.”
Kim worked as a senior adviser of intelligence at the National Laboratory in 2009. A media spokesperson with the State Department introduced him to Fox News reporter James Rosen. Shortly after that, Kim was charged under the Espionage Act of leaking sensitive information about the possibility North Korea’s would conduct additional nuclear tests.
