A young Filipino American has paid homage to her community’s history by organizing the first ever Destination Delano tour, reports ABS CBN.
Delano is in the southern portion of the Central Valley in California and is where Filipino Americans began organizing farm laborers in the 1950s.
It is currently home to some 16,000 Filipino Americans, about one-third of the town’s population.
“We’re all coming together for a movement,” Jaki Joanino explained. “This is a movement to recognize our history and let the rest of this nation see how important the contribution of our manongs are.”
Johnny Itliong father was among those who lead the farm labor movement.
“I’ve seen a church being burned down, the violence of the police, foremen beating up the people I call uncles and aunties,” Johnny recalled.
You can read a lot more about this very unique and interesting tour on ABS CBN.
October 25 would have been Itliong’s 100th birthday. You can read a lot more about him in the Inquirer.
