A government panel is recommending that Bangladesh increase the minimum wage paid to the country’s garment workers by 80 percent, reports the Wall Street Journal.
The recent tragic fires and growing labor movement had lead to the renewed push for a larger minimum wage.
Under the current proposal the minimum wage would be upped to $67 a month.
“It’s the minimum the workers will accept.” said Amirul Haque Amin of the National Garment Workers Federation.
Many American retailers of course import much of their clothing from Bangladesh. They too have expressed an opinion on the wages there.
You can read about that in the Wall Street Journal.
