A new study has found a lack of brown fat may be the reason for an increased risk of diabetes in South Asians, reports Medical News Today.
Researchers in the Netherlands say South Asians are especially at risk for type 2 diabetes and can get type 1 diabetes at a much younger age than the general population and at a much lower body mass index than whites.
The study published in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology says the brown fat, also known as brown adipose tissue, is 34 percent lower in South Asians than the Caucasians in the study. Previously studies have found brown fat has a positive effect on glucose tolerance, lipid metabolism and body weight.
