Hyphen: An Asian American mom’s battle with postpartum depression

CATEGORIES

Baby's handSharline Chiang writes for Hyphen Magazine that she lived a lie.

She told her mom everyday that everything was fine.

But it wasn’t, far from it.

Sharline went from the highs of being a new mom to an all time low.

How could I tell my 70-year-old mother who had finally become a grandmother the truth—that I was going crazy, that in two months since giving birth I had gone from being thrilled to fighting thoughts of killing my baby and myself?

Sharline was battling postpartum depression. It was a secret she could not share, until now.

Sharline writes a truly gripping tale of her bouts with depression after one of the happiest moments of her life.

Kudos to Sharline.

Colorlines reports that postpartum depression is barely acknowledged in the Asian American community or the medical profession. In fact, Asian women report being the least likely to report being told about the condition by health professionals.

You can read Sharline’s story in Hyphen Magazine.
