Ohio’s first Filipino American mayor, Ronald “Ron” Falconi, will be sworn into office on Dec. 27, reports GMA News.
Falconi was elected mayor of the city of Brunswick last month. Brunswick has a population of 35,000. About 90 percent of the population is Caucasian.
Since the election, Falconi has focused on raising donations to help the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in his parents’ native country. Born and raised in northeastern Ohio, Falconi is the son of Filipino immigrants. Falconi is a lawyer by profession and has been a member of the City Council since 2008.
Because of the city’s budget problems, he has voluntarily waived raises he was to receive and, instead, cut his own salary.
“I thought it was the right thing to do because when I am asking City Hall to cut its spending why shouldn’t I also cut my own paycheck?” said Falconi.
