Two commemorative postage stamps honoring two Japanese American war heroes were unveiled in the Nation’s Capital, reports Asian Fortune.
The honorees were the late Senator Daniel Inouye and George Sakato, Army Medal of Honor Recipient.
“I think for the senator, he would want to acknowledge all of the men and women that served with him in the 442nd,” said Inouye’s widow Irene. “Many of them did not return home. The Congressional Medal of Honor was a big honor for him, but I know he accepted it on behalf of all of them.”
Sakato along with Irene helped unveil the series of postage stamps which also paid tribute to other veterans who received the Congressional Gold Medal.
Like Inouye, Sakato served during World War II. He led an attack that killed 12 and captured four in France in 1944.
