Benzinga: Acupuncture use among Asians Americans may cause Hepatitis C

CATEGORIES

acupunctureAsian Americans are more likely to contract the Hepatitis C (HCV) infection, according to a recent study released by the Journal of Digestive Diseases and Sciences.

The study suggests that the heightened risk could be due to the higher prevalence of acupuncture use and possibly contaminated acupuncture needles in Asian American cultures.

The study authors wrote, “the difference in risk factors between Asian and non-Asian HCV patients could be due to … exposure to contaminated needles, since these tend to occur in more routine and casual settings in Asian communities.”

The prevalence of HCV among Asian Americans is also much higher than the national average. According to the study, 6 percent of Asian Americans have HCV, while only 1.3 percent of all Americans have HCV.
