Pasifik Voices at the University of Washington is more than just a talent showcase.
Its a way for Pacific Islanders to be seen and heard, reports the International Examiner.
“We’re almost invisible,” said Dakota Camacho. “Most people don’t really know who we are, and there are a lot of stereotypes that go along with that. When people think of Pacific Islanders they just think of big Samoan football players, they think of the Rock.
“The point I was trying to get across with Pasifik Voices is that … we are a very diverse people. We have different voices and different talents that take many forms—whether it’s stories or spoken word or singing and dancing.”
Performances ranged from traditional dances to folk and pop singing to rap.
Some of the performers managed to fit in a social message too. You can read about that in the International Examiner.
