Glendale News Press: Comfort women statue named newsmaker of the year

comfort women memorialThe Glendale News Press has named the California city’s  comfort women statue (photo by Melissa Wall) its newsmaker of the year.

The statue has taken on a life of its own with conservatives in Japan calling for its removal and Korean Americans on the West Coast hoping to convince other cities to erect their own statues.

The statue honors the up to 200,000 women who were held as sex slaves during World War II for the Japanese military, but some say the women were actually willing prostitutes.

The memorial has put the small Southern California city of 194,000 people under the international spotlight.
