Did you know that the developer behind the trendy new messaging app, Snapchat, is a Filipino American named Bobby Murphy?
Nope, neither did I.
For some reason, the founding of the up and coming startup tends to focus on Evan Spiegel, the other co-founder of the app. In Forbes’ 2014 30 Under 30 issue featuring young people who are “changing the world,” Spiegel’s face is featured on the cover, while information about Murphy is left for the inside.
While 23-year-old Spiegel might be the ‘face’ of Snapchat, 25-year-old Murphy is, no doubt, the ‘brains’. The two met as students at Stanford where Spiegel contracted Murphy to develop the app.
According to Forbes, Murphy is the child of state employees from Berkeley and his mother immigrated from the Philippines.
Snapchat was released in 2011 and enables users to send photo and video that disappear in 10 seconds or less after being opened. It’s estimated that around 450 million ‘snapchats’ are sent everyday.
