Two Filipino American sisters in the Bay Area are raising thousands of dollars for Typhoon Haiyan relief, one bracelet at a time.
Malaya and Tala David, ages 10 and 13, began selling colorful handmade $10 bracelets in December to raise funds to rebuild a school in Tanauan, a town in the Philippines hardest hit by the super storm. By the end of the month, they had raised $2,160, well over their initial goal of $1000. Then an anonymous donor came forward and donated $100,000 to the sisters’ cause.
Malaya wrote on the Haiyan Bracelets website, “Maraming, maraming salamat!!!!! Thank you everyone for your support, your inspiring comments, your donations. Thank you to my family, thank you to all our friends. Your support has inspired me to keep going, the children in the Philippines need our support to rebuild school destroyed by Haiyan”.
The sisters continue to make bracelets in their free time. They are now hoping to use the money to build two schools in Tanauan.
