South Korea is planning to partner with Taiwan, China and other Southeast Asian countries to apply for United Nations world documentary heritage status for the “comfort women,” who were forced into prostitution by the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II. (photo via Keith PR)
“We will file an application with the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to list “comfort women” in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register,” said Kim Un-ji, a Korean official.
The Korean Ministry of Gender Equality and Family is working to collect all comfort women-related data and documentation from South Korea, Taiwan and other countries in order to submit an application to inscribe “comfort women” in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. If the application is approved, “comfort women” would be designated as a UNESCO documentary heritage by 2017.
