(note from the Editor: Today, AsAmNews is going to pay homage to other Asian American bloggers by devoting much of this space to stories inspired by those bloggers. This story I heard about from Angry Asian Man Phil Yu is one of them.)
If you’ve ever seen reruns of the show Cheers or remember it when it was must see TV on NBC in the 80’s and early 90’s, you know we all need a place where everyone knows your name.
That’s the case for a group of Korean American senior citizens who have made a local McDonald’s in Queens their hang out.
Unfortunately for them, according to Angry Asian Man and a piece in the New York Times, that McDonalds has begun to consider those seniors a nuisance.
Managers says they are squeezing out other customers and have asked the Korean seniors to leave. Police have even been called in to deal with the situation.
The seniors who say they are paying customers and have every right to be there have responded by leaving, then returning a little later. Some have spilled coffee.
Angry Asian Man called it a “defacto” sit-in.
You can read his piece to get a better understanding of the situation.
But if there’s ever been anything that exemplified for the need for expanding programs for Korean American seniors, or adding space to the local senior citizens center, this is it.
