Diversity is not only the right thing for Hollywood to embrace, but it’s also profitable.
That’s the conclusion of the 2014 Hollywood Diversity Report, Making Sense of the Disconnect by UCLA’s Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies at UCLA, reports NPR.
The study found shows with 41 – 50 percent non-white characters attracted the highest ratings on broadcast television. In cable, the same held true for shows with 11 -20 percent diversity casting.
Despite that, there is still a lack of diversity in both broadcast and cable with just 5 percent of lead characters going to minorities on broadcast television. Just under 11 percent of the lead actors on cable are non-white.
