Olympic veteran Julie Chu goes for the gold today with Team USA in women’s hockey.
The gold medal game is scheduled for Noon Eastern/9am Pacific on NBC.
As the forward and veteran of the team, Julie will play a key role in determining whether Team USA comes home with the gold or silver.
Asiance recently talked to Julie’s mom, Miriam Chu, about her daughter.
What is it like for a mom to watch your daughter growing up in a rough and tumble sport like hockey? Isn’t she afraid Julie could get hurt?
“Hockey for Julie has been a blessing,” said Miriam. “There were no girls’ teams for Julie up here in Connecticut, so she had to play with the boys. She was always a head taller than all the boys, so it never dawned on me that she could get hurt. Knock on wood! She’s been pretty healthy. No severe injuries. She hurt her knee once and that’s it.”
Julie’s mom says her boy teammate have always been supportive of her daughter.
“I have to give credit to her teammates. She has never been on a boys’ team where they didn’t accept her. She never wanted special treatment.”

(an earlier version of this story incorrectly stated Chu was Team USA’s goalie)
