Being a third generation Chinese American, I don’t feel a real strong connection to my ancestral homeland, China (photo by KevinRushforth).
Sure, I’ve been fortunate enough to journey on a roots trip and saw the house my grandfather grew up in. I admit feeling a sense of pride and appreciation for what my grandfather went through to come to America to establish a better life.
But there’s no question in my mind my allegiance is with the United States.
Every two years in the Olympics, I get very little joy watching China standing on the gold medal podium. I’m pretty sure my parents feel the same way, although my mom still enjoys watching Chinese soap operas and other Chinese programming.
A blog by Spirited Girl talks about watching her first generation Korean immigrant parents unabashedly root for Korea during the Olympics, while she would root for America and especially hard for any Asian American athletes like Kristi Yamaguchi or Michelle Kwan.
What generation are you and which countries do you root for during the Olympics.
